(1) What was English life like under Oliver Cromwell?

Oliver Cromwell was an English statesman, politician, and soldier. After he reigned victorious in the English Civil War, he had two objectives for the growing power that was England: to restore order, and to foster piety and morality. Being a Catholic and Puritan, Oliver stated that many normal earthly pleasures and activities were forbidden, such as taverns, theaters, etc. Women could only wear long dresses lacking color and had to have their hair covered with a thick veil. Men as well could only wear black clothing which lacked life, they were also not allowed to grow their hair out. Life in England was being influenced by heavy catholic beliefs and ordeals.

(2) What was the Glorious Revolution? Why is it significant in English history?

The Glorious Revolution (1688-1689) was the replacement of the intolerable, Catholic King James II and the beginning of the reign of his son-in-law William of Orange. This event is significant to English History due to its famous title “The Bloodless Revolution” – no battles were fought and no deaths were committed, leaving it as a very interesting and important part of English history.
