MEROVINGIANS TO CAROLINGIANS; TRANSFER OF POWER

The Merovingian dynasty was the ruling family of the Franks from the middle of the 5th century until the 7th century. Towards the second half of this blood line’s reign, the dynasty goes through extreme hardships and challenges, making them look incompetent and foolish. Examples such as the kings of the merovingian bloodlines oddly began reproducing many mental defectives or the title was bestowed on mere selfish and competitive children, slowly declining the significance of and power held by the king of the Franks. The rivalry between noble siblings caused many internal divisions among noble enemy factions, declining Merovingian status. Soon, an office in the Frankish bureaucracy titled as the mayor of the palace began exercising the duties of kingship and received the power of a king, due to the poor work done by the ruler. This office was held by the family and bloodline known as the Carolingians, and with the spotlight of inability shining in the face of the Merovingians, the mayor of the palace began to plan and question how to take the power from the current king.
